Inclusive value chain collaboration in the tree crop sector in Ghana and South Africa For greater food sovereignty and sustainable landscapes MAIN FINDINGS

Value chain collaboration

1. Tree crop farmers are food secure But 40-65% experience seasonal challenges (Ghana) Differences within households may exist (SA) Climate change and (in some regions) small-scale mining affect food production (Ghana)

2. Small-scale farmers are not all the same Different profiles according to gender, parttime/fulltime farming, commercial orientation and aspirations E.g. entrepreneurial farmers, mixed income farmers, sharecroppers, cash crop farmers (Ghana) Each profile goes together with specific conditions for engagement in VCC and innovative capacity

3. Farmers exert agency They combine commodity and non-commodity production and/or engage in multiple value chains as a deliberate strategy to reduce risk and dependency They negotiate access to markets, credit, resources, knowledge and innovations through VCC Difference between food security and food sovereignty: autonomy over production and marketing

4. Changemakers can be entry points for transformative change Brokers of access to markets, resources, knowledge, innovations “Movers and shakers” Have a vision, network and drive to improve farmers’ lives for the better Analyse support services and knowledge exchange from below

5. Innovations come as much ‘from below’ as they come ‘from above’

6. Learning platforms as a space for joint learning and knowledge sharing To be organised at the level that is most relevant for the farmers
