June 28, 1914 -Assassination Archduke Franz Ferdinand July 28, 1914 - Austria declares war against Serbia July 31, 1914 - War between Austria and Russia August 1, 1914- Germany, bound by the Triple Alliance declares war with Russia. France and Britain, bound by Triple Entente, automatically at war with Germany. In just over a month, all of Europe is at War – the Great War has begun.
