Presentation transcript:

Conference on National platforms for SDG reporting 22-24 January 2017, New York Agenda item 10: The way forward 1) Possible next steps for countries and partners 2) How can these efforts be supported Matthias Reister, Chief Development Data Dissemination Section Statistics Division, Statistical Services Branch United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs

The (possible) way forward (by UNSD, for discussion, as of 24 January 2017) Possible next steps for countries, partners and solution providers 1. Develop your business case and mobilize the required resources 2. Share information about own experiences 3. Share your solution 4. Cooperate with other countries 5. Conduct/join pilot efforts 6. Ensure interoperability of solutions New York, 22-24 January, 2018

The (possible) way forward (by UNSD, for discussion, as of 24 January 2017) How can these efforts be supported? 1. Scaling up and refocusing technical assistance activities (for example, the UNSD-DIFID project can support countries in the identification of an appropriate NRP solution and in certain aspects of its development and implementation). 2. The results of the conference will be presented to the UNSC as a background document, including the principles and guidelines and considerations for the way forward. 3. Finalization, communication and use of the principles and guidelines: a. A worldwide consultation and/or focus group discussion could be conducted to further validate them and bring them before the UNSC in 2019 for adoption; b. They can be shared widely with countries, international organizations and other stakeholders and promoted at workshops and events. New York, 22-24 January, 2018

The (possible) way forward (by UNSD, for discussion, as of 24 January 2017) How can these efforts be supported? 4. Establish a public information platform/wiki 5. Organize a session on NRPs at the UN World Data Forum in October 2018, introducing the results of the conference and enlarging its discussion; possible event in June in China; 6. Establishment of a user community and/or a community of practice 7. Enlarge the discussion and bring in additional users and aspects (platforms at sub-national and locals levels, platforms at international and regional levels etc.) 8. Follow-up conference – where do we stand? In late 2018 or early 2019? New York, 22-24 January, 2018
