The Future - Interoperability NATO UNCLASSIFIED Interoperability between Secure GSM terminals Needs an agreed standard signalling scheme One solution is FNBDT FNBDT - Future Narrow Band Digital Terminal Provides interoperable secure communications between terminals using a data connection Negotiates best secure connection between equipment subject to communication bearer between terminals available features in equipment e.g. voice coder A minimum set of terminal features are mandated to ensure interoperability FNBDT has been released to many nations Being released to NATO NATO UNCLASSIFIED 20 November 2018

The Future - Interoperable voice NATO UNCLASSIFIED STANAG 4591 - The New NATO Narrow Band Voice Coder Selected in Oct ‘01 after extensive competition All NATO nations invited to submit candidate voice coders Best performing candidate selected as STANAG 4591 STANAG 4591 Provides good quality speech at 2.4 and 1.2 kbps Is being used in many secure communications systems Can be used for secure GSM Mandated as a minimum requirement for interoperability within FNBDT (in 2.4 kbps mode) Stanag 4591 Workshop - October 18th, The Hague Information on Stanag 4591 at http://nc3a.info/Voice Source code available from NC3A secure site http://elayne.nc3a.nato.int/S4591 NATO UNCLASSIFIED 20 November 2018
