Solar and Lunar Eclipses
Eclipses When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs. There are 2 types of eclipses: solar (sun) eclipse & lunar.
 When the moon’s shadow hits the Earth or when the Earth’s shadow hits the moon an eclipse occurs.
Eclipses Solar and Lunar. What is a solar eclipse The moon passes in a direct line between the Sun and the Earth The moon’s shadow blocks out the sun.
Eclipses What is the length of time from a new moon to the next new moon? 29.5 Earth days Moon rotates and revolves around the Earth every 27.3 days.
Eclipses What is an eclipse? The total or partial obscuring of one celestial body by another. Eclipses occur when the moon’s orbit which is tilted becomes.
Solar and Lunar Eclipses. What is an eclipse? An eclipse occurs any time something passes in front of the Sun, blocking its light. This can be the Earth.
Eclipse of the Moon (lunar eclipse) A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon. This casts a shadow over the Moon. Lunar.

By Holly, Shania and JADe. WHAT IS A LUNAR ECLIPSE? A lunar eclipse is when the moon passes directly behind the earth into its shadow.

Eclipses. SOLAR ECLIPSES Solar Eclipse- caused by the moon making a small shadow on the Earth. –Moon crosses in front of the sun. –Moon is in a new moon.

Shadows. Shadows- areas light cannot reach due to an opaque object in light’s path. There are two parts to a shadow. Umbra- sharp black center of a shadow.
Eclipses (23). Eclipses occur when the moon or sun moves into the moon’s or Earth’s shadow. Parts of a shadow: –Umbra: total shadow – complete eclipse.
Eclipses. What is an eclipse? The partial or total blocking of one object in space by another When the moon or Earth casts a shadow on the other It can.
Lunar & Solar Eclipses. The moon's orbit around Earth is slightly tilted with respect to the orbit around the sun. As a result, the moon travels above.
Eclipses. Shadows Note the shadow differences with a small light source vs. a large light source.
Main IdeaDetails Eclipses. Eclipse- When the moon’s shadow hits Earth -or- the Earth’s shadow hits the moon.
PHASES, ECLIPSES, AND TIDES. MOTIONS OF THE MOON The changing relative positions of the moon, Earth, and sun cause the phases of the moon, eclipses, and.
 Occur when the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon.  Only occurs when the Earth, moon, and sun are lined up exactly.

Bell Ringer Sometimes during an eclipse of the moon (lunar eclipse), only part of the moon we see is blocked. Other times, the entire moon we see is blocked.

What does it mean?? * write this underneath your cer insert Claim: Statement about the results of an investigation An answer to a question Evidence: Scientific data used to support the claim (qualitative or quantitative) Reasoning: Ties together the claim and the evidence. HOW or WHY does that evidence support the claim??? Includes scientific principles that are important to the claim

CER EXAMPLE Is air made up of matter? Claim: Air is matter Evidence: All matter has mass and takes up space.. For example, a deflated balloon has a mass of .065g. If we were to blow up the balloon, its mass increases to .070g, and the balloon is taking up more space. Reasoning: Air has both characteristics of matter because both the mass and volume of the balloon increased after we added air to it.

In short A CLAIM STATES THE CASE EVIDENCE TELLS/SHOWS US WHAT HAPPENED REASONING TELLS US WHY OR HOW THAT EVIDENCE SUPPORTS THE CLAIM REASONING DEFENDS THE EVIDENCE

What type of eclipse took place on august 21st, 2017? Claim: On August 21st, 2017, a partial solar eclipse occurred. Evidence: The moon passed through the sun’s light, casting a shadow on Earth and making the sky temporarily darker. We only saw part of the sun during those seconds. We were in the penumbra portion the shadow. Reasoning: A partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes almost directly between the sun and the Earth, and the moon casts only the outer part of its shadow, the penumbra, on Earth. The sky temporarily darkens. This incident occurred on August 21stduring a partial solar eclipse.
