The Big Learning Week Ghislain De Bondt

Centrum voor Basiseducatie ‘Leerpunt’ Zuid-Oost-Vlaanderen The BIG project week Centrum voor Basiseducatie ‘Leerpunt’ Zuid-Oost-Vlaanderen

Hi I’m Ghislain and I work at a great school Center for Basic Education ZOVL Adult education specific for lower skilled adults - Mission = increase literacy skills Courses are built around keys skills Maths - reading&writing Dutch - ICT - general subjects: theoretical drivers’ license, how to cope with stress, live healthy, be assertive, …. Top course = learning Dutch for foreign language speakers (70%) +/- 2300 adult students/yr in our region - staff = +/- 65 +/- 40.000 students in Flanders (and Brussels) in sector Basic Education with +/- 1000 staff

Before we dive into the main subject ... ….. brief history lesson

The origin of the Centers of Basic Education: volunteers - the 60ties

In 1990 we were added to the Education field - we became teachers

Parental Advisory: this is rather exaggerated !!! After 25 years a lot is changed - we now have curricula - we deliver certificates …. more formally education

Every approach has his qualities but …. Curricula Certificats Modularisation courses ... Teach what you want No evaluation No curricula ... ...it’s all about blending the best of both ‘worlds’

We strongly felt the need for a new andragogical project

Important Guiding Principles More initiatives that bring natives and immigrants together Our team wants more focus on innovation and creativity Facilitate ways to encourage students to show their talents More competence driven learning in authentic learning tasks Less formal teaching methods Bringing teachers from different domains together Important Guiding Principles

How can we stimulate this? Let’s start with a BIG project week!

So we started to brainstorm in a workgroup

And we made choices with our teachers

Conclusions about our approach The team wants a very BIG … BIG project week! We dismiss all courses during one week All teachers hold workshops ‘as much as they can’ and -if they could- in allocation with students We choose to work around a common subject Every lunchtime students can stay and eat something what is cooked in one of the workshops Every student can subscribe for every workshop Conclusions about our approach

2014

90 workshops on 6 locations - subject: leisure Google Drive: promo-presentations en subscribe lists Example subscription list Aalst Administration: consult verification Team logistic

Evaluation Wow !!! Teacher: I felt like I was back at the boy- scouts This is learning in a very fun way Some students were a lot different than during the ‘normal’ courses It’s nice to see natives and immigrants work together and have real contact Administration: it was hell But … let’s do this again !!! Evaluation

2015

Subject: arts&culture (in town) Even more workshops Promo-presentation Aalst New way of administration ticketing system No lunch (much more activities outside the school) End activity

2016 BIG …. BIG changes

It was a success again … but this version ... NO subject: it’s all about gaining new impressions NO administration please … attendance lists for activities during normal schedule Thursday we all went out and visit something together (per location), so more than 400 students went out on a school trip BUT ...we started this academic year in september with 4 groups of project-based learning for an experiment of one year. → Four teachers organise projects with students about different subjects. It’s the teacher who ensures that all competencies (like maths, languages, social skills, …) are covered. 4 groups/total of appr. 40-50 students First project = start to gardening!

So … step by step we are heading to more experience driven and project-based learning
