Railroad Map What region of the country has the most railroads by 1850? How might this impact the region’s economic development? Why might the other region lack many rail lines?

The factory system In what region of the country were most factories located and what did they make? What politician supported the American system(that advocated for more factories)? How do you think the spread of factories to the North and West will impact these regions economic development? Do you think the state(federal government) should help businesses in this time period and give me a reason why.

3 stages of factory development Northern Industrialization took place in three stages: 1) Putting out system where each worker made one thing at home. 2) All workers in one building making one product in parts (factory activity) 3) Machines(e.g., the sewing machine of Elias Howe) make goods in a factory operated by people.

The Mill girls What do you remember about the mill girls and the challenges they faced? Women were easier to hire and fire because their were more female workers available. Many mill girls workers went on strike(stopped work) to demand better working conditions. Still others threatened to form trade unions(organizations of workers in a similar trade) to represent their demands. As protests increased more farm girls or immigrants brought in to replace workers who threatened to strike. .

The plow John Deere built the first steel tipped plow in 1837. Cut through hard soil much more effectively than earlier iron designs. .

The McCormick Reaper Invented by Cyrus McCormick. Allowed famers to cut wheat must faster. Replaced cutting the crops by hand.

Farming writing prompt You are a farmer at the turn of the 19th century. You have just received a McCormick reaper and have easier access to a rail line. Write a journal prompt that has you compare your life as a famer before the new technology arrived as opposed to now that they have the machine. Paragraph 1: Your life on the farm before the rail and reaper came to the community. How much work did you have to do to run the farm. Was most of your time spent on fun activities or farm work (e.g. feeding the animals, planting crops)? Paragraph 2: How has the reaper and rails made life easier for you on the farm? What activities do you now have time to do that you could not do before(work in a factory, move to a city, get active in political causes)? Is life harder now that you must plant more?
