Religion and Science 1450-1750

Evolution vs “Intelligent Design Christianity gains a global presence for the first time The Scientific Revolution offered a different approach to the world Tension grows between religion and science in the Western World

Christianity and Science Gains Popularity The Scientific Revolution created a new cultural encounter between science and religion Science became almost a new religion to some people and became part of the definition of global modernity Europeans were the central players, but they did not act alone

The Globalization of Christianity The protestant reformation splits the church starting in 1517 Luther’s ideas provoked a massive division in Catholicism Protestant revolution attracted many woman without being granted a greater role.

The Reformation Spreads Printing press helps spread the reformation at a much more rapid pace As it spread, Protestantism splintered into competing churches Religious differences makes Europe's political system more fractured

The Catholics Strike Back

Continued…. The Reformation encouraged skepticism toward the authority and tradition of the Catholic church The Protestant Revolution made a habit of independent thinking which lead to all religions being challenged.

Christianity Spreads Outward Conquests in the new world help spread Christianity to the far reaches of the world Imperialistic countries such as Spain helps make Globalization possible

Conquests turns to Conversion Spanish America became receptive to the conquering religion due to the massive population collapse. Europeans claim absolute religious truth, However blending of religions became common

China and the Jesuits Christianity makes its way to China through the powerful Ming and Qing Dynasties. Jesuits targeted the Chinese elites, but no mass conversion occurred Missionaries found that they couldn’t offer much that the Chinese needed

Change in Afro-Asian Cultural Traditions African Religion followed Slavery into America African Forms of Christianity develops including divination, dream interpretation, visions, and spirit possession Europeans suppressed these as sorcery

Expansion and Renewal in the Islamic World Continued spread of Islam depended on wandering holy men, scholars, and traders Orthodox Muslims became increasingly more offended by the blending of Islamization Most well known Islamic renewal movement was the period of Wahhabism

China.. Again Chinese and Indian’s cultural/religious change wasn’t nearly as dramatic as Europe’s Ming and Qing’s still operated on the framework of Confucius New thinking and debate did occur in China

India: Bridging the Hindu and Muslim Divide Several separate movements brought Hindu’s and Muslims together in new forms of religious expression From this Sikhism grows and gains popularity Sikhism is a blend of Islam and Hinduism
