Make a fence around the Torah What exactly does that mean? עשו סיג לתורה Make a fence around the Torah What exactly does that mean?
Have you ever been to an art museum with precious works of art?
They don’t leave the artwork available for anyone to touch …
Instead they protect it WITH ROPES WITH SIGNS Sometimes even WITH GLASS
In a similar way, we must protect the mitzvot of the Torah But instead of using Ropes or Signs or Glass We add on extra restrictions
The classic example is with MUKTZA on Shabbat
One of the 39 malachot is כותב - writing
We want to protect that mitzvah and not even to come close to being עובר on it, to violating it
So Chazal made it אסור to even move a pen or pencil
Another way that we can “Make a fence around the Torah” is … To not put ourselves in situations that might cause us to do something wrong
