Textbook & Instructional Materials Affordability Annual Report 2017-2018 September 5, 2018

Authorization Education Access & Affordability (HB 7019) Each BOT to adopt policies and develop institutional initiatives for innovative pricing techniques and payment options to reduce the cost of course materials. Reporting Requirement Textbook & Instructional Materials Affordability Report (BOG Reg. 8.003) Reporting University practices designed to reduce costs of course materials (due to the BOG by September 30 of each year).

Adoptions and Pricing Variances of Course Materials Textbook & Instructional Materials Adoptions (45 days prior to semester start) Semester Adoption Rate (95% required) Course Sections Courses Sections Missing Adoptions Course Sections Compliant Fall 2017 95% 8,674 427 8,247 Spring 2018 97% 7,952 275 7,677 Pricing Variance of $200 or More (2017-2018 instances) An instructor utilizes a more comprehensive book for two courses (Macro and Micro Economics), which is a cost saving to students Faculty recommend extra textbooks for optional readings but do not require them A faculty member uses a text that exceeds the $200 threshold by $3. The chair will mentor the faculty member to adopt more affordable options used by other instructors. 3,575 course sections throughout 1,618 courses did not require purchase of materials 42% of high enrollment courses have materials chosen collectively by all instructors teaching the course
