The Sleep of Indifference Where as in most parts of the United States, the War of 1812 spurred business and brought new ideas, this was not the case in North Carolina, who had done very little to promote education, science or promote industry. Since it seemed North Carolina was “asleep” and letting progress and change pass it by, it became known as the “Rip Van Winkle state”.
