Value of the Month Sense of Shame 耻

What is Sense of Shame? A person with a sense of shame shows disapproval for what is wrong and is humble in admitting one’s mistakes. The sense of shame is a moral compass which guides a person to behave properly and gives him/her the self-discipline to do the right thing. Explain to students that through this lesson, they will learn to see that the actions of humans many atimes, act against the environment and are not deemed right. Through the lessons, engage students to reflect how some of their actions are not deemed right and how they should behave properly towards the environment and have the self-discipline to do the right thing towards the environment.

Video: play until time: 4 39

Class Discussion How do you feel after watching the video? Do you have a part to play in destroying the environment? What is your rationale of doing the above? What specific improvements can you make from now on? Buzz time: Students to share their feelings after seen the footage. Guiding Questions: What are some of the human activities shown in the video? How do u think those activities affect the environment? Why the concept of environment is evolving to become more significant in the past decade? Why isn’t the situation getting better? Get some of the students to reflected about some of the things they have done in school / at home that may contribute to energy / food / water wastage.

Teacher to share some statistical data to raise students’ awareness in the ever-increasing energy, water and food wastage in Singapore in the past decade. Teacher to stress the urgent need for self-reflection and intervention before it’s too late.

Waste Statistics 2000-2011 (Singapore)

What are we doing? Teacher to make use of the poor living conditions in Africa to make students reflect on their own behaviours that leads to wastage, and to guide them in thinking about possible interventions to minimise wastage in school / at home.

Teacher to stress the importance of individual effort as the starting point in the environment conservation campaign

Difference between one-time effort VS consistent effort…

To summarise… Small efforts can make a big difference We should develop empathy for the environment. We should move beyond empathy and take actions to bring about real change. We must never be afraid to do the right thing even when it is not the most popular choice. Everyone has a part to play in conserving the environment. Small efforts can make a big difference

The Environment Pledge Steps: Cut out a small flower shape using the paper egg carton Colour it with your favourite colours Write the action that you have done against the environment all these while. Write down a short pledge for yourself (on one of the petals of the flower) to commit to environment conservation which may be on energy, water or other resources.

The Environmental Pledge ‘Egg Carton Craft Making’ Steps: 4. Stick your artefact on the noticeboard to remind yourself constantly of the promise you have made
