Take a minute and write down what you think is in your Digital Footprint

What is a Digital Footprint and what does yours convey? Digital footprint is a trail left in a digital environment from TV, mobile phone, internet and world wide web Digital footprints provide data on what an entity has performed in the digital environment; and are valuable in assisting behavioral targeting, personalization, targeted marketing, digital reputation In social media, a digital footprint is the size of an individuals online presence; as it relates to the number of individuals they interact with.

Where Have You Left Your Digital Footprints? Have a discussion where you think footprints are left and what can be done about them.

Digital footprints are……. traces left by someone’s activity in a digital environment. two main classifications: passive digital footprint is created when data is collected about an action without any client activation active digital footprints are created when personal data is released deliberately by a user for the purpose of sharing information about oneself

When Does Your Does Your Digital Trail Start? All of us, like it or not, are creating these trails. There is all kinds of information ABOUT YOU to be found online. Digital Dossier Video

Why is your digital footprint important? Recruiters look for methods to differentiate between candidates Who’s a viable candidate… Who’s not a viable candidate Recruiters need evidence to validate their decision 17

How Can These Sites Be Beneficial? LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/ (for HR/Recruiters when searching for job candidates) Populate your profile with keywords Enhance your chances of being “found” by recruiters Write recommendations…include your name/job title/contact info Demonstrates initiative, communication skills, passion for HR/Recruiters when searching for job candidates. Twitter: There are a lot of links that will help you manage twitter and find jobs on twitter – just takes a little digging. Blogging: Demonstrates initiative, communication skills, passion for subject matter Positive (not phony), upbeat, value-add Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ Presentable portrait Post resume Keep “Friend” comments and responses upbeat and professional Recruiters source Facebook to determine compatibility, communication skills, professionalism

Can You “Google” Me ? A potential employer, college recruiter or client googles your name and does not find anything or much?  A principal searches for a potential hire’s name and work and does not find anything? What does it mean NOT to have a digital footprint in these cases? What happens when you try to Google yourself or someone else? Why and when do we need to Google someone?

Improve Your Online Image Use your full name for your Facebook and Twitter pages (Once you’ve done this- maximize your privacy settings) Avoid damaging online behavior (Removing anything that suggests addiction, dishonesty, anger, political or religious views, and information about current or previous employers.)While you’re at it, get rid of incriminating photos by un-tagging yourself and asking the owner to delete them permanently. Upload a professional (and purposely public) profile via Linked In (to show career highlights) Comment on blogs or articles (that will display you as the thoughtful and intelligent person you are – not the drunk party goer from “that” university bash) Consider registering your name as a domain. - Use Google Alerts to monitor what others are saying about you and react quickly should disaster arise.

Footprint Tracking Tools Some You Have Never Heard of: (click the icons to take you to the website) Pipl: ($) claims to search the deep or invisible Web to find documents, blog entries, photos, publicly available information that other search engines don't serve up. Spokeo: It will search across all major social networks and the Web to dig out your activities on them. 123people: is a real time people search service that looks into nearly every corner of the Web consisting of images, videos, phone numbers, email addresses, social networking and Wikipedia profiles plus much more.. Spy: can "listen in on the social media conversations you're interested in." Google Alerts: Allows you to receive emails about certain topics People Finder: Reverse Search Monitter: Finds Twitter topics BrowserSPY: Searches your internet browser for sites visited Social Mention: Traces for subjects across variety of social media
