Emergency Communication When an emergency occurs at the library, you need to know how to activate the emergency response system. The systems are different for the Main Library and for the branches and Data Center. We are all connected as one phone system, but your location determines the number you should call.

Which Number Should I Call? Main 3333 Branch 9-911 911 At the Main Library you should call 3333. Security Staff, who are trained to respond in an emergency, will be sent to the situation, and then emergency personnel will be dispatched through the 911 system. Branches and the Data Center initiate this response by calling 9-911. If you use the fax phone, just dial 911. These phone lines are separate from our main phone system, so you do not need to dial 9 to reach an outside line before calling a phone number.

900 Library Plaza Two Different Numbers Also, we are all connected on one phone system, but whether calling from a branch or the Main library, the address will show as 900 Library Plaza. However, remember that fax phones are separate from our main phone system. These phones will show the correct location. Either way, it is important to know the physical address of your location.

Directions Cross streets Preparation Physical Address Directions Cross streets “We’re on State Boulevard, between Anthony and Crescent, right next to Abby Brown’s.” There are two easy things you can do to prepare for emergency calls: Memorize the physical address of your building; Learn to give directions to your building. It's helpful to keep a card near the phone with address information nearby, so the staff will be able to easily tell the physical address of the building. In a stressful situation sometimes people do forget the location. This is especially helpful to staff who travel from location to location within the system, like branch floaters. Sometimes, giving directions can also be a challenge. Even though the 911 operator is able to bring up your location on their computer, giving directions with cross streets is helpful. If you use your personal cell phone, the operator can sometimes get a general area of your location. Again, giving the physical address and directions makes it easier and faster for emergency personnel to locate the library.

Use it or lose it What is the physical address of your library building? Where can you make a note of this so you will not forget in case of emergency?

What Happens When I Call 911? Call Taker Dispatcher When you call 911 from a branch, the Data Center, or a cell phone, the call goes to a call-taker at the 911 desk. The information goes into the emergency system and is simultaneously seen by the dispatcher. The dispatcher decides whom to send to the emergency. The call taker can pull up a map, but some maps have errors. So again be sure to give a physical address. Sometimes the call taker will ask questions over and over to get additional details to pass on to emergency personnel, such as the type of medical emergency, but they're also talking with the dispatcher. They may also offer basic suggestions to deal with the injury.

What Happens When I Call 3333? Security Center Call Taker Dispatcher At the Main Library when you call 3333 the call goes to the Security Center. There's a staff member there during library hours, plus one hour before opening and one hour after closing. Security will take your information and call 911. This frees up library staff to deal with the emergency. The call taker at 911 will keep Security staff on the phone and get details such as where to send the emergency personnel, and then the call taker contacts the dispatcher. Security staff simultaneously activate cameras so they can see the situation, and they can send more Security staff to address medical emergencies, cleanup, and so forth.

Librarian in Charge (LIC) Time of Day Branch Manager in Charge (BMIC) Librarian in Charge (LIC) Many emergencies happen during administrative business hours, that is, before 5:00. When an emergency occurs after 5:00 pm, or on the weekend, you must contact other key personnel. The Branch Manager in Charge (BMIC) and the Librarian in Charge (LIC) are librarians who are designated to be the emergency contact person outside of administrative hours. There is always a BMIC and an LIC on duty during library hours. The Security Center has this posted daily for Security staff to see. Who is the Branch Manager in Charge and the Librarian in Charge? Speak with your manager to learn where you can find this information.

Use it or lose it Ask your manager to show you where to find the LIC calendar (Main Library) or the BMIC calendar. Is it posted in your agency?

When the Library Must Close Director Senior Manager text If there is a reason to close the library due to an emergency, the BMIC and the LIC will communicate that to library staff via the phone tree.
