Saint Christopher & saint Sylvia Parish 7th/8th Grade Curriculum Youth Alive Saint Christopher & saint Sylvia Parish 7th/8th Grade Curriculum

Format 7th/8th grade curriculum is combined, then divided into 6 subjects Most classes are on Saturday’s & Sunday’s. Must take 1-4 credits in each subject for a total of 15 courses (plus eight prayer days) over two years Choose how you want to fulfill requirements by selecting classes that fit your schedule, needs, and interest.

Curriculum Personal Growth/Morality (4 credits) Jesus and the Gospel Message (4 credits) Sacraments (4 credits) Christian Sexuality (1 credit) Church History (2 credits) Prayer (8 credits) (6 are scheduled each year must do a minimum of 4)

Sample Classes THE HISTORY OF THE ICON (Church History) Sat. February 3 10:30 am-3:30 pm St. Chris School $25 You will learn the history of the Icon and how we came to have them when they were forbidden in the Old Testament. See how they started and how they were created through the years with different artists and craftsmen. Do you notice the differences through the years? Then make one of your own! BRING A BAG LUNCH! SACRAMENTS OF HEALING (Sacraments) Sun. December 3 10:30 AM Mass Church 12:00 noon-3:00 pm St. Chris School $20 Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick are the Sacraments of Healing. Come learn about these two sacraments which heal and renew our spirit and repair our relationship with God. Then support those in need of these sacraments by creating get well cards for the sick. You will also work together in groups to create posters for our second graders who will be receiving their First Reconciliation. BRING A BAG LUNCH! WALKING WITH JESUS (Jesus & The Gospel Message) (2 Credits) Wed. March 28 6-8pm St. Chris School $20 Thu. March 29 6-8pm St. Chris School Fri March 30 4-8pm John Bosco Hall, St. Chris Church Explore the New Testament accounts of Jesus and His followers by walking along with them. On Wednesday, we will discuss the accounts leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus and start rehearsals. On Thursday, we have another rehearsal and on Good Friday, students will finish preparing for and participate in a Living Stations of the Cross. Parents don’t miss this one …it’s beautiful and powerful! BRING A BAG LUNCH-NO MEAT! Dessert will be provided!

Fees Fees are dependent upon which courses are taken and is due with registration Canceling at least 14 days ahead of time (30 days for a trip) will result in a full refund/credit Classes for which you are on a waiting list will not be billed until you are accepted into the class You will receive an invoice indicating which classes your child is in which includes your statement of fees.

Prayer Services First one is in August, just before we begin each year Prayer services are held in the Church Required attendance by student and one parent

Parent Involvement A parent must attend the prayer services with their child. Parents are expected to assist with at least one class per year. (Didn’t sign up, no problem, we will sign you up for one) Parents are sometimes needed to chaperone when the class involves a trip. Have a special talent, hobby or interest? Consider teaching a course based on that!

What’s new? Classes may not be repeated for credit (determined by name of class). New classes are added each year. Must attend a minimum of 7 classes per year. Emphasis on interaction with the church community Expectations – cell phone attendance, behavior Not too many home studies

Requirements for entering Confirmation Program All Youth Alive classes for 8th grade students must be completed by the end of the school year to be eligible for Confirmation in the fall. All prayer services must be attended. 20 Hours of Community Service must be completed You may take three years to complete the program if necessary. You must attend Mass, Confession regularly.

This summer you will receive by email: course schedule and registration form the registration due date the dates of the prayer services a copy of the participation record Choose your courses (we recommend 7 per year), mark them on your calendar, send in the registration form and fees. 8th graders get first priority Sign up for 5 to get 4 Let us know if
