Case Study: The Work, Health and Disability Green Paper Data Pack The Work and Health Unit launched a consultation in 2016 to hear how best to help people with disabilities and health conditions to enter and remain in employment. Our aim: to bring together timely statistics that cover work, health and disability in a way that is relevant and helpful for the consultation. How we achieved this: Build a consensus from the start Shared ownership of evidence Enhance key policy arguments Regular catch-ups to anticipate needs Collaborating with analysts Working closely with policy colleagues Focus on a clear narrative Use of DWP stats template Headings telling the story, key chart, and additional info in the text Clear on standards to achieve for official stats publication Sufficient time for production & QA In October 2016, Improving Lives: the Work, Health, and Disability Green Paper set out our ambition to transform employment prospects for disabled people and people with long-term health conditions, inviting views on a ten-year programme of reform Majority of consultation responses were supportive of the case for change and general principles, with many recognising the scale of the challenge ahead The Conservative manifesto committed to getting ‘1 million more people with disabilities into employment over the next ten years’ – revising the commitment to halve the disability employment gap set out in the Green Paper We published Improving Lives: the Future of Work, Health and Disability in November 2017 to respond to the Green Paper consultation and set out the next steps we plan to take in this agenda This publication also acts as the formal response to Thriving at Work: the Stevenson/Farmer review of mental health and employers
