Diamonds

Earth’s natural resources (diamonds, gold, copper, oil, minerals) are not distributed equally on all continents. This is because they are all formed under different geological conditions.

World’s largest diamond—”Star of Africa”

It’s on the next slide in full screen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f48PopFqzNk&t=1085s Answer the questions on the listening guide as you watch this video all about diamonds. It’s on the next slide in full screen.

Are diamonds made from coal?

Are diamonds made from coal? NO!!! Coal Diamonds Diamonds are PURE carbon Coal is a hydrocarbon, which means it isn’t pure carbon…it has hydrogen mixed in

The structure of the molecule matters! These items are all made of carbon, but they have a different chemical structure. COAL Graphite Diamonds

COAL DIAMONDS Hydrocarbon Sedimentary Rock Made from plants Found closer to the surface than diamonds Very “soft” rocks that break easily Pure carbon Igneous Rock Older than plants Found at deeper depths than coal The hardest mineral in nature

Can you burn diamonds?
