Service in the Art Curriculum UN Sustainable Development Goals

Year 7 Unit 2- Natural Typography: Goal 15- Life on Land. Use typeface that students create to produce words / slogans to support Goal 15 Unit 4- Fish Prints: Goal 14- Life Below Water Rather than using real fish for Gyotaku, we’re using alternative printing methods and highlighting the issues surrounding over fishing and fishing methods. Year 8 Unit 2- Geometric Portrait: Goal 3- Good Health and Well-Being Reminding students of our biological selves and that our genes don’t entirely dictate our health- our decisions play a major role. Using geometric shapes and lines, students will create portraits to represent their biological self and the links between our decisions and the consequences. Unit 5- Paper Engineering: Goal 8- Economic Growth Students will look at how the concept of growth can be interpreted visually and then 3-dimensionally whilst considering what it means to have a stable economy that is inclusive and sustainable. Students will work collaboratively to reinforce the inclusivity in producing a “stable” outcome.

Year 9 Unit 3- Imaginary Landscapes: Goal 11- Sustainable Cities and Communities Students are to reflect on Shanghai as a city and community- considering the positives and negatives. These reflections will then form the narrative behind their zentangled landscapes- using pattern and symbolism to represent their ideas. Unit 5- Clay Heads: Goal 10- Reduced Inequalities Students will research and explore “other cultures” from around the world. Their findings will lead to the creation of a ceramic head, decorated in traditional pattern and colour as a celebration and appreciation of the culture.

GCSE Graphic Design Students will be introduced to all of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as prompts for their design briefs. e.g. Unit 1- Typographic Portrait to be used as a Book / Album Cover… I will create a cover design for a dystopian novel that describes a future after all natural energy sources have been consumed. I will use a typographic portrait of a child as this will appear more harrowing and emotionally gripping. The text I will use for the portrait will be taken from current news stories, as though this terrible future was predicted. (Goal 12- Responsible Consumption and Production)

GCSE Fine Art Students will be introduced to all of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as prompts for their meanings / messages. e.g. Unit 1- Layers- 2D When tackling the theme of Layers, I initially looked at seed pods and those sorts of natural forms, as I was interested in the visual aspect of their structures. As I was experimenting with printing methods, paper cutting and digital layering, I began thinking about the issue of climate change and its affect on the natural forms that I am studying. The seeds and pods that I was investigating have evolved and changed over time to become efficient in reproducing the plant, tree or grass that it will grow into. However, due to the impact of our industrial development and lack of care with regards to pollution, our climate is changing at a much faster pace than it should and so the natural forms, organisms and wildlife may not be able to evolve with it. Through the use of layering, dark tones and image removal, I hope to show this concern in my work. (Goal 13- Climate Action)

IB Visual Arts Students will be introduced to all of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Students will be asked to reflect on the goals for each project and make links when it is appropriate. All of the IB projects could offer themselves to most of the goals. But some of them have clear links… Unit 1- Art Remade- All (dependent on artwork picked) Unit 2- Recycled- Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production Goal 13: Climate Action Unit 3- Memorial- Goal 1: No Poverty Goal 2: Zero Hunger Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being Unit 4- Conflict- Goal 5: Gender Equality Goal 10: Reduced Inequality Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Unit 5- Metamorphosis- All (change, progress etc.) Unit 6- Personal- All (dependent on chosen theme)
