Act 1, Scene 6 Duncan, the Scottish lords, and their attendants arrive outside Macbeth’s castle. Duncan praises the castle’s pleasant environment, and he thanks Lady Macbeth, who has emerged to greet him, for her hospitality. She replies that it is her duty to be hospitable since she and her husband owe so much to their king. Duncan then asks to be taken inside to Macbeth, whom he professes to love dearly.

ACT 1 SCENE 7 Macbeth contemplates the murder of King Duncan, and notes that if it were simply a matter of killing the king and then moving on without consequences, it wouldn't be a big issue. However, he is scared of being damned to hell for his action, as murdering Duncan in Macbeth's own home would be a serious violation of hospitality. He's supposed to protect the king, not murder him. In addition, Duncan is a kind and generous and heaven is bound to frown upon murdering such a decent fellow. Macbeth decides against the murder, since he has no justifiable cause to kill the king, except for his ambition. Lady Macbeth enters, scold him for his indecisiveness, questions his manhood, and lays out the plan to get Duncan's guards drunk and frame them for the murder. If Macbeth can't keep his vow, then he is not a man. Macbeth is impressed by her show of strength, and finally resolves to go through with the murder.

MACBETH Bring forth men-children only; For thy undaunted mettle should compose Nothing but males. Will it not be received, When we have mark'd with blood those sleepy two Of his own chamber and used their very daggers, That they have done't? LADY MACBETH Who dares receive it other, As we shall make our griefs and clamour roar Upon his death? MACBETH I am settled, and bend up Each corporal agent to this terrible feat.
