The Impact and Value of Instructional Coaching May 1, 2014

The IC Picture Student Engagement Instructional Strategies Content Knowledge Assessment for Learning What is Instructional Coaching? “Instructional coaches are on-site professional developers who teach educators how to use proven instructional methods.” Jim Knight We can help get the machine moving with teachers, students, and administrators. Our overall goal is to increase student engagement through instructional strategies and content knowledge in order to impact student achievement. Our ICs use a collaborative, partnership approach with teachers to help guide goals and encourage reflection.

Followed by Instructional Coaching High Quality Workshop (Showers, 1983) Followed by Instructional Coaching (Knight, 2007) 15% Percent of New Teachers Implementing New Skills 85% Why Instructional Coaching? Of course, teachers are very well intentioned to implement, but they get back to the classroom and materials is added to the to-do stack that at retirement is passed on to another teacher as resources. Stats show that only about 10-15% of teachers actually go back and transfer what they learned into the classroom. Studies are showing that professional development coupled with instructional coaching is one of the best ways of increasing implementation rates. Implementation Accountability The #1 way to improve student success, is to increase teacher quality. Education has spent all of their money and time on systems change, programs, etc. Where has it gotten us? The classroom is where everything happens: The teacher is the #1 indicator of how a student will progress. This is where the focus should be. Coaching Approaches and Perspectives by Jim Knight Corwin Press, 2009

Region 13 Model Pre-Conference Observation & Walk-Through How we do it. Based on what we’ve heard from districts about the implementation within our region, the Region 13 Instructional Coaches use an adapted coaching model from Jim Knight and Steve Barkley to take what’s learned at R13 and incorporate it into the classroom. This model includes a pre-conference, an observation with measurable outcomes, and a post-conference. Collaboration between teacher and coach is crucial to getting full impact and value of the IC Program on campus. Confidentiality and relationships are a priority of the R13 Coaches. This trust drives the success of the coaching cycle. Post-Conference & Debrief

Student Engagement Student Achievement Use of Best Practices Value Investment in your teachers can be made with either time or money. Making that choice for your district can produce a strong return on investment over time through teacher morale, staff retainage, student achievement, and reaching district goals. Changes aren’t seen immediately and successes are usually seen starting in years two and three. Our goal is to build capacity within the teachers, departments, and districts.

Value = Value-Add Benefits Costs Positive Campus Changes Salary/Region 13 Contracts Workshop Attendance Substitute Days Materials & Resources Positive Campus Changes Use of Best Practices Increased Productivity Relationship Building Teacher Confidence Teacher Knowledge Base Student Achievement Collaboration/Sharing Teacher Accountability Value-Add The Value-Add Results When the investment is made, the value is greater benefits over cost. Growth continuum: Little GrowthEvaluating (dictate)Consulting (tell/show)Bridging (tell/ask)Coaching (ask)Collaborating (sharing)Maximum Growth

It takes all pieces coming together to make sense of the puzzle. Collaboration! Administration Students Region 13 Instructional Coach Teachers Instructional coaches encourage collaboration instead of giving directives. Collaboration is the key. When everyone has common vision and desired outcomes everything comes together nicely. Communication makes the collaboration possible and effective. It takes all pieces coming together to make sense of the puzzle.

From this… To This! Through collaboration and communication, instructional coaches can help give clarity to the unknown through research-based strategies and proven track record. Considerations when making coaching placements, whether district or Region 13 coaches, include matching for content, teacher need, personality of campus and coach. Time should be structured to fit district goals and initiatives, while helping teachers learn and grow.

New Programs Offered in 2014-2015! We are proud to launch 3 new programs: BOY Teacher Boot Camp Instructional Coach Endorsement Program RtI Network Region 13 Instructional Coaches offer support for both teachers and instructional coaches on your campus through coaching, networks, and a couple of new programs.

Words from the Field… I am grateful for the guidance and leadership I received from the coaching program.   Thank you so much! The teachers RAVED about your sessions with them after ICN. They love that what you present is new to them, manageable, and engaging. Thank you so much for the time you give us each day at the JH. The teachers and students appreciate you more than you will ever know. THANK YOU! Thanks so much again for coming to do the training. The teachers are super excited, and that's always so GREAT to see!! You did an awesome job, and I am looking forward to helping them make this work in their classrooms. Here are comments from some of our Region 13 districts where we've provided services.
