About The Iroquois The Haudenosaunee enemies called them the Iroquois. The Iroquois called themselves Haudenosaunee. Haudenosaunee means people of the longhouse. The Haudenosaunee’s enemies were the Algonquin.

The Dogs who Saved their Master This story was retold by Glenn Welker. This story is from the Iroquois group.

The Problem in The Story The problem was that there was a creature in a tree that was killing all the forest animals. The hunter had four dogs, Four-Eyes, Long-Tooth, Quick-Foot, and Bear-Killer. When the dogs saved their master, the four dogs died.

The Beginning of the Story In the beginning, there was a hunter who couldn’t find food. Then, all of a sudden, he shot a fine buck. He noticed that his dogs didn’t surround him. He called their names, but they still didn’t come.

The Middle of the Story Then, the smallest dog, Four-Eyes, said that there was a creature in the tree and to run away and don’t look back. That’s what the master did. Then, the master stopped and Four-Eyes came out from a bush and said, “My brother Bear Killer is dead and the creature is still coming.” Then Four-Eyes said to keep on running and not to look back.

The End of The Story Then Quit Foot died and Four-Eyes said, “Keep on running.” Then, the master stopped running and Four-Eyes said, “My brother Long Tooth is dead.” She also said, “If I die, promise you will get our bones and buried them.” Then, the master knew that Four-Eyes died. The next day, the master got the bones and buried them.

The Values I Learned Treat others the way you will like to be treated. Care about other people. Always be nice. Bravery is very important. Never give up. Always respect people and animals.

The Artifact I Replicated The artifact I copied was a Longhouse. This artifact was from the Iroquois people.

Iroquois Artifact The longhouse was a place for story telling. The longhouse was a place for eating. The longhouse was a place for sleeping. The longhouse was a place for making things. For an example, the Iroquois made clothes out of skin from the animals.

Things the Long House Was Made Out Of The materials that the long house was made out of was poles. It was also made out of pieces of bark. Their life style is different from today. They cooked food in the longhouse, under little holes that the fire comes out of. The longhouse could be about 200 feet long. The longhouse could be about 36 feet wide. Each family had their own hole to cook their food.

What Did I Learn from This Artifact? The things I learned was that Iroquois made their houses out of many things they found around them. They used their houses for many things. For an example, they ate, slept, and made things to trade.
