Understanding the concept of ‘explanation’ Explaining concepts Why did Germany hate the military terms of the Treaty of Versailles? ‘They hated the fact that their army had been reduced to 100,000 men because this was not many and it meant that they had a small and weak army.’ This would make them vulnerable to attack because Germany was surrounded by heavily armed neighbours.

Understanding the concept of ‘explanation’ Explaining concepts Explain the significance of the Medieval Church in the development of medicine (8 marks) For this 8 mark question - Students need to identify and explain at least aspects of significance, this was one: One reason why the Medieval church was significant in the development of medicine was because they trained all the doctors. The church was the most powerful institution in the country and controlled universities and education. They trained doctors the ideas of Hippocrates’ Four Humours and based much of the doctors training on Galen’s Theory of Opposites. So what? Question: Does this answer count as historical explanation?

Understanding the concept of ‘explanation’ Explaining concepts Explain the significance of the Medieval Church in the development of medicine (8 marks) One reason why the Medieval church was significant in the development of medicine was because they trained all the doctors. The church was the most powerful institution in the country and controlled universities and education. They trained doctors the ideas of Hippocrates’ Four Humours and based much of the doctors training on Galen’s Theory of Opposites. This was a significant development in medicine because by training doctors with the Ancient ideas of Galen, mistakes about anatomy and understanding of disease was passed on for hundreds of years, thereby hindering any progress in medicine.
