The Relationship Local Literacy Plan Literacy Needs Assessment What plan (including goals, proposed outcomes, etc.) will best address our prioritized assessed needs? What is the current state of birth-12 literacy in our district?

How NOT to think about this… We do the needs assessment because we have to. We create a plan for what we wanted to do in the first place, and cherry-pick specifics from our needs assessment to make sure reviewers see the connection. We know what we want to do already. How NOT to think about this…

Where do these belong in the application? Reference needs assessment in project plan (Requirement). Full needs assessment or parts of needs assessment could be included as an appendix. Sample Literacy Needs Assessment 7 Sections: Leadership Community and Partnerships Standards-aligned Curriculum Standards-aligned and Evidence- based Instruction Transitions Data-based Decision-making Professional Learning Sample Literacy Needs Assessment

Sample Literacy Needs Assessment Recommended: Not Recommended: Sample Literacy Needs Assessment A small team of district leaders fills out the needs assessment during one of their regular meetings. Make educated guesses about answers, based on personal experiences and perspectives. Fill out needs assessment based on what a district already knows it wants to write into its application. Engage partners with expertise in each area of the rubric. “Plan your work, then work your plan.” Who is needed in order to ensure accuracy of assessment? In what ways will we engage them? Pay attention to how the components align with your KESA work. Discuss your findings and build your literacy plan based on your findings.
