10 Index Cards and 1 rubber band Front (blank side): Vocabulary Term You will need 10 Index Cards and 1 rubber band Front (blank side): Vocabulary Term Back (lined side): definition/types, illustration, examples

Name Game What are the SEVEN CONTINENTS?? What are the FOUR OCEANS?? Asia Europe Africa Australia Antarctica North America South America What are the FOUR OCEANS?? Pacific Ocean Atlantic Ocean Arctic Ocean Indian Ocean

Definition of Geography study of the earth's surface; includes people's responses to topography (landscape), climate, soil and vegetation Ex. Oceans, continents

EQ: Why Study Geography in a class about World History? It affects where people live It affects how people live It affects the outcome of major events

The 5 Themes of Geography Location Movement Region Place Human/ Environment Interaction

Define Hemisphere: Half of a globe (in our case the Earth)

Definition: These show points on a map as north, south, east and west. Cardinal Directions: Definition: These show points on a map as north, south, east and west. Illustration:

Definition: This section explains the map symbols on a map Map Legend or Map Key: Definition: This section explains the map symbols on a map Illustration:

Intermediate directions : Definition: This part of the map shows points as north, northeast, northwest, south, southeast, and southwest. Illustration:

Compass Rose: Definition: design on a map that shows directions. It shows north, south, east, west, northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest. Illustration:

Map Scale: Definition: shows the ratio of the indicated distances on the map to the actual physical distance Illustration:

Grid: a pattern of regular shaped horizontal and vertical lines. Definition: a pattern of regular shaped horizontal and vertical lines. Illustration:

Definition: a set of values of points that identify a location Coordinate Definition: a set of values of points that identify a location Illustration: (31˚ N, 83˚ W)

EQ: Why Study Geography in a class about World History? It affects where people live It affects how people live It affects the outcome of major events

5 Themes of Geography Rap Click on URL to open Web Link

Theme #1: Location Definition: Where is it? Two Types: Absolute: Given in degrees of latitude and longitude Example: 31° N latitude, 83° W longitude (Location of Valdosta, GA) Relative: Depends upon point of reference, Example: near, far, a short drive, time, direction and distance. Example: Our school is near Hahira.

Absolute Location: Absolute Location is found by using… Two specific line types Latitude Longitude

Absolute Location: Latitude Lines AKA (Parallels) Latitude lines are drawn from: West to East Latitude lines measure: North to South

Absolute Location: The Major Line of LATITUDE is the: Equator It splits the Earth into: the Northern and Southern Hemispheres

Absolute Location: Other important lines of LATITUDE: 22 1/3° North = Tropic of Cancer 22 1/3° South = Tropic of Capricorn They are important because: They get the most direct sunlight making these areas the hottest places on Earth

Absolute Location: They are important because: Other important lines: 66 1/2° North = Arctic Circle 66 1/2° South = Antarctic Circle They are important because: These areas get the least amount of sunlight. Part of the year there is no sunlight and the other part of the year there is no darkness.

Absolute Location: Longitude Lines AKA (Meridians) Longitude lines are drawn from: North to South Longitude lines measure: West to East

The Major Line of LONGITUDE is the: Absolute Location: The Major Line of LONGITUDE is the: Prime Meridian It splits the Earth into: the Eastern and Western Hemispheres

Absolute Location: Can you find an ABSOLUTE LOCATION??? Using Latitude & Longitude Try the worksheet!

Absolute Location: 30°N 15°W 45°S 45°E 30°S 60°W 15°N 30°E 30°N 60°W

AKA: Mapmaker Cartographer Definition: A person who is trained to place the round world on a flat piece of paper. AKA: Mapmaker

Theme # 2: Movement Definition: the way people, products, information and ideas move from one place to another. We connect all of our world together (globalization) Example: transportation, communication, trade. Patterns of migration, Linkages and connections

Movement: How can things move??

Theme #3: Region Definition: Basic unit of geographic study Based on physical and human characteristics. Focuses on what makes areas similar. Formal: City, State, Country, Continent Functional: one central place and is surrounded by the areas it affects. Example: Hershey, PA

Example: City, State, Country, Continent Region: Formal Regions is an. . . Area in which a certain characteristic is found throughout the area Example: City, State, Country, Continent

Functional Regions Region: Have one central place and is surrounded by the areas it affects. Example: Hershey, PA

Theme # 4: Place Definition: What is it like? Human and physical features of an area. Two Types: Physical: landforms (Mountains, Hills, Plateaus, Plains, and Climate) Human: traditions, customs, religion, beliefs Bridges, roads, buildings (things we build)

Theme # 4: Place Example: If you refer to your school as a place, then that place would include walls, windows, gym, cafeteria, classrooms, people, clothing, books, maps, mops, brooms, hallways, mice (if you have them) and everything else in the school, including the languages spoken.

What is the difference between Location & Place? ???????????????????????????????? What is the difference between Location & Place?

What is the difference between Location & Place? Location: 5° S , 68 ° W

What is the difference between Location & Place? Place: Describe

Place: What is it like?

Theme #5: Human/Environment Interaction Definition: relationships between people and their environment; how they adapt, change and depend on their environment.

Human/Environment Interaction: Example: Depend: the annual flooding of the Nile River produced good soil for growing crops

Human/Environment Interaction: Example: Adapt: ancient Egyptians rebuilt their homes each year, after the annual flooding. As time went on, they built their homes above the flood plain

Human/Environment Interaction: Example: Modify (change): ancient Egyptians built irrigation ditches to help water the crops. In modern times, Egypt built a dam to control the flood waters of the Nile River
