Welcome to your first “real” day Today we will do the following: L.O – Learn about the origins of Sociology E.Q – How did Sociology come to be? C.T- Students will discuss in partners and provide an exit ticket answering the E.Q.

In the beginning…. Sociology is one of the YOUNGEST social sciences. There are several founding fathers of sociology Auguste Comte – Coined the phrase sociology.

About Comte Father of Positive Philosophy OK LETS CLEAR ONE THING UP Positive… doesn’t necessarily mean “POSTIVE” There is no optimism, pessimism just positive So what do you think positive means?

According to Comte Positive means positive about knowing! ONLY VAILD KNOWLEDGE is knowledge gained through the scientific method. Experimentation and observation

So how did we get here? Progression through 3 Stages Theological (fictitious) Metaphysical (abstract) Positive (scientific) Religion plays less of a role as society progresses

Theological (Oldest) Humans used Gods to explain the unexplainable Religion without science 3 Stages Fetishism – Spirits in Nature .Game of thrones spirits in nature. godswood Polytheism – Many Gods (Egyptians) Monotheistic – One main God progression

Comte: In the Theological Stage People Explain all natural events as the work of supernatural powers

2nd Stage Metaphysical Stage An Abstract power guiding the world according to some fixed principles People scientific in mindset but also believe in a higher power John Locke – All people created with God given rights of Life Liberty and Property Scientific Religion

Comte: In the Metaphysical Stage The scientific and religious world views coexist to make sense of the world

Positive Stage (Final Stage) Someone looks at things EXCLUSIVELY through scientific method nothing else. Things may not always make sense and that is ok and is truth. Newton’s law of gravity Theory of Relativity relates nothing to religion

Comte: In the Positive Stage The positive is a stage of PURE scientific thinking and nothing else.

REVIEW 3 Stages are: Theological (Fictitious) Metaphysical (Abstract) Positive (Scientific) Progress = Less Religious More Scientific

Comte: Laid the foundation
