INTRODUCTION Vocabulary is a powerful carier of meaning. Beginners often manage to communicate in English using the accumulative effect on individual word. The meaning is conveyed by vocabulary itself

The Roles of Vocabulary in the Classroom Vocabulary is very important and need to be dealt with systematically in its own right Some new vocabularies should be practiced, learnt to store, recalled and used English-English dictionary is a vital tool for students to self study We need to distinguish between vocab for productive and receptive use We need to be dealt not only with single word lexical items but also with longer multiword items

Vocabulary in the Classroom A great deal of vocabulary work in class occur mostly in relation to reading to listening skills work

A brief lesson procedure for a reading and speaking lesson including vocabulary work Pre-teach Vocabulary *Use board pictures to draw airport. Elicit the following items (and clarify those they don’t know): plane, checking, take off, delayed, passenger, customs. *Practice pronunciation *Focus on getting the stress correct *Make sure students get oral practice

Written Practice of Vocabulary Give a student a handout showing photos of an airport, with a list of words around the edges. Students must match the words to items in the picture by drawing lines to link image and word. They check answer with the other students.
