PRE-MEMBERSHIP EDUCATION SEMINAR WHAT IS PMES? PRE-MEMBERSHIP EDUCATION SEMINAR WHY ATTEND PMES? Because it’s a pre-requisite to become a Coop Member Because through PMES, you as an applicant will understand what coop is, it’s principles and values, and the duties and responsibilities of being a member

A COOPERATIVE IS … Autonomous association of persons United VOLUNTARILY To meet their common economic, social and cultural needs Through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise

PURPOSE OF A COOPERATIVE Encourage thrift and savings mobilization among the members Generate funds and extend credit to the members Provide goods and services

MEMBER-BASED MEMBER-OWNED MEMBER-FRIENDLY MEMBER-CO-OPERATION “In Short, MEMBERS are the key to the SUCCESS or FAILURE of the Cooperative” Thus, No one shall be considered as Member without undergoing PMES to protect this identity.

Unique Identity of a Coop It is both an association of people and a business enterprise. Members come together to achieve a common goal That common goal is to help them acquire a product or service to satisfy an economic need. To achieve these goals, they go into business themselves

WHEN DOES COOPERATIVE FAILS When Member have no Real OWNERSHIP WHEN DOES COOPERATIVE FAILS When they see themselves as CLIENTS to be served ONLY When Members feel disinterested or feel alienated When Members seeks for their OWN interest, not for the over-all membership

THE COOPERATIVE PHILOSOPHY HELP ONE SELF END THRU THE COOP MEANS Madam, Not sure if the sequence is correct  HELP OTHER END

Core Philosophy of the Cooperative 1. Help oneself thru the Coop 2. Through the COOP, help OTHERS

Democratic Member Centre Cooperatives are democratic organization, controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. Men and women serving as elect representatives are accountable to the membership. In primary cooperatives, members have equal voting rights (one member, one vote)

COOPERATIVE VALUES

COOPERATIVE VALUES SELF-HELP In cooperatives, people help each other while helping themselves by working together for mutual benefit The Cooperative teaches that if you want to be helped, help yourself first. You can be of help to other Members directly or indirectly if you are a good member, not a coop liability

COOPERATIVE VALUES 2. SELF-RESPONSIBILITY Individuals within cooperatives act responsibly and play a full part in the organization

COOPERATIVE VALUES 3. EQUITY In the Cooperative, members contribute equitably their capital

COOPERATIVE VALUES 4. DEMOCRACY In the Cooperative, everyone can participate and will be heard. For example during General Assembly, everybody can make suggestions or share ideas for the improvement of the cooperative.

COOPERATIVE VALUES 5. EQUALITY In the Cooperative, every member has equal rights no matter the status in life No rich, no poor. Officer or not same policy applies.

COOPERATIVE VALUES 6. SOLIDARITY Supporting each other and those in other cooperative

COOPERATIVE VALUES 7. HONESTY Being truthful in all dealings/transactions and circumstances, inside and outside the office Coming the office on time

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES VOLUNTARY & OPEN MEMBERSHIP Open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES 2. DEMOCRATIC MEMBER CONTROL Democratic organizations controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions. In primary cooperatives, members have equal voting rights (one member, one vote).

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES 3. MEMBERS’ ECONOMIC PARTICIPATION Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of their cooperative. At least part of that capital is usually the common property of the cooperative.

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES 4. AUTONOMY AND INDEPENDENCE Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If they enter into agreements with other organizations, including governments, or raise capital from external sources, they do so on terms that ensure democratic control by their members and maintain cooperative autonomy.

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES 5. EDUCATION, TRAINING & INFORMATION Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, & employees so that they can contribute effectively to the development or their cooperatives. They inform the general public, particularly young people & opinion leaders, about the nature and benefits of cooperation.

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES 6. COOPERATION AMONG COOPERATIVES Cooperatives serve their members most effectively & strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional & international structures.

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES 7. CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members.
