A Day in the life of a Kindergartener,,,

Arrival: Children arrive, unpack, make lunch choices and work on morning work. RTI: This is a designated time of day to work on specific needed skills. Groups are differentiated to meet individual needs.

Specials: 8 day rotation: Day 1- Art Day 2- PE in the big gym Day3- Media Center Day 4- Career Planning Day 5- Music Day 6- PE in the Multi Purpose Room Day 7- PE in the big gym Day 8- Science/Math Lab.

Daily 5 Literacy Block: Literacy Centers: 1. Writing 2.Reading to self/partner 3. Word Work 4. Technology 5. Guided Reading with teachers.

Readers Workshop: We focus on story elements and comprehension of stories here. Lunch: 11-11:30 Rest and Renew Writers Workshop: A mini lesson on writing, then students have a chance to practice with guidance.

Math: Whole group math lesson Math tubs to practice skills Recess: We go to the playground daily. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather. Calendar: An interactive group time where many phonics, social, math and reading skills are practiced at this time.

1. Listening and speaking – children will be asked to listen attentively to a variety of literature. They will participate in poems, stories and songs. The children will use oral language to present ideas, information and projects in an organzed and logical sequence. 2. Reading - The daily reading instruction consists of five elements: Read Aloud, shared reading, Guided Reading, Independent Reading and Phonics. Read Aloud- The teacher reads a variety of literature aloud to the class modeling appropriate reading behaviors, demonstrating reading for a purpose and promoting oral language. Shared Reading- Using enlarged text, the teacher involves the children in reading together. This demonstrates reading strategies and the process of reading:, providing opportunities to behave like a reader. Guided Reading-The teacher works with a small group of children that have similar reading levels. This provides opportunities to problem solve and use reading strategies taught from shared readings. Independent Reading- Reading for pleasure and for finding information

3. Writing- The daily writing instruction consists of 4 elements: Shared/Interactive Writing, Writers Workshop, Independent Writing and Daily Message. Shared/Interactive Writing- The teacher and students work together to compose messages and stories. This builds the childs sense of story and demonstrates how writing works. It provides opportunities to hear sounds in words and connect letters (phonics practice) and increase spelling knowledge. Writing Workshop- The children engage in writing a variety of texts. During this time writing skills are taught and practiced. Children learn to be creative writers. Independent Writing-Children are encouraged to produce independent stories. They increase their ability to write words, Daily Morning Message- Children learn and practice early editing skills. The focus is on punctuation, grammar and syntax. 4. Phonics:: Our phonics program is Fountas and Pinnell. Students are taught the relationship between letters and sounds in a systematic way.

Math: We are teaching children to be mathematical problem solvers and learn to use math in their daily lives. 1. Whole Group: Introduction to Common Core math standards happens at this time through manipulatives, demonstrations and interactive games on the computer. 2. Math Tubs: math tubs give the kids opportunities to practice and master math standards by exploring at a concrete level first with manipulatives and later transferring their knowledge at a more abstract level. 3. Calendar Math: Calendar is an important part of math instruction. Estimation, measurement, number sense, patterns and relationships are introduced, practiced and mastered during this time.

The skills in these subjects are integrated through Read Alouds and practiced through Writers Workshop, Literacy Centers and Math Tubs. Science experiments and other thematic related skills also take place on Fridays during our Fun Friday Centers!

What is the Common Core Curriculum? We have adopted a new curriculum along with most of the states in the USA. This curriculum is based on performance standards and includes opportunities for deeper thinking. Our new report card is based on the Common Core Standards.

Our school year is divided into four quarters. There are particular skills that we focus on in each quarter. As the quarters progress, so do our expectations. Our report card is a progress report that allows for you to see your childs progression of the skills being taught. Letter grades are not given. We have a continuum of levels that your child will progress through. The levels are as follows: 1= limited progress 2= progressing 3= Achieving (This is the goal.) 4= Mastery (This is above and beyond the goal)
