Associated Students Senate Informational Spring 2018

What is Associated Students? Student government & programming board Funded by $117 student activity fee Comprised of both elected and appointed students Comprised of the Senate, Executive Board and Programming Board Solves student issues Financially supports several campus services Facilitates communication between student organizations Serves as the official student voice to the administration.

AS Mission Statement The Associated Students Leadership Team serves the University of San Diego undergraduates as official representatives, who promote opportunities for growth and expression, address student issues, and enrich a diverse, inclusive, and engaged community.

Requirements for Associated Students Senator Positions You must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 You must complete an elections packet (Application, Signatures Form, DARS screenshot) Academic senators must be declared in a major of the college for which they seek to represent

AS Executive Board Elected Positions AS President AS Vice President AS Speaker of the Senate AS Athletics Chair

Requirements for the Executive Board You must meet with whoever holds the current position you’re interested in Candidates for AS President must have 90 completed units or be in the process of completing 90 units Candidates for all other executive board positions must have 60 completed units or be in the process of completing 60 units If you wish to waive a requirement, you must submit an appeal to the Director of Recruitment as soon as possible

AS President Face of Associated Students Leads and manages AS year-round Attends Board of Trustees, Finance and Senate meetings Lead and plan AS Executive Board Meetings Meets with administrators, advisors, and AS Exec members Plans semester retreats Trains new President Elect and helps appoints positions

AS Vice President Serves as liaison to all Student Orgs and Academic Initiatives Serves on Finance Committee Attends Board of Trustees, Exec, and University Senate meetings Trains new VP elect and helps appoint positions Helps plan retreats Attend Faculty Senate Head of AS academic grants process

Speaker of the Senate Runs Senate meetings according to parliamentary procedure Supervises Senators and selects Pro Tempore & Parliamentarian Appoints and supervises committees and chairpersons Attends Board of Trustees and Exec meetings Trains incoming Speaker of the Senate

Athletics Chair Serves as a representative at Athletics Committee Board of Trustees Acts as the liaison between the Athletics administration and the undergraduate student body Serves as the Chair of the Bull Pit Oversees all athletic and spirit related initiatives of Associated Students Spearheads school spirit and partners with other University areas Trains incoming Athletics Chair

Responsibilities of Senators Represent your residential and academic constituents Be present for 2 weekly office hours Attend Senate and Committee meetings during Thursday dead hours Volunteer at and support TPB events Attend mandatory retreats and trainings, TBA ~5 hours/week total

Timeframe of Election March 5th - Information Sessions Start March 15th - Applications are due for elected positions March 16th - Candidates are notified they are eligible to start campaigning March 19th - Candidates start campaigning April 10th - Primary Presidential Debate April 12th - Primary Election April 17th - General Debate April 19th - General Election April 20th - appointed positions applications open April 25th - first round appointed positions interviews begin (Finance Chair, Comm Chair, TPB Chair, and Chief of Staff) April 30th - second round appointed positions interviews begin (Controller, Director of Recruitment, and Director of Brand Marketing, Committee Chairs)

Election Rules It is your responsibility to know all rules and regulations as they relate to campaigning and the election process. These can be found in the Associated Students Election Bylaws USD posting policy is very strict. Please know and understand it.

FAQs Q: If I am elected as an Academic Senator and I switch my major to a different college, will I lose my position? A: No, you will be allowed to finish the year in your elected position. Q: Will I receive a paid stipend for being an AS senator? A: In the past years USD has passed a budget which includes work service awards for AS positions including senators who are eligible for federal financial aid. Q: Can I appeal the results? A: Candidates can appeal the results if they have proof of rule infringement by another candidate that drastically affected the results of the election. Appeals must be submitted to the Director of Recruitment no later than 5 days after the election.
