Presentation transcript:

The slides that follow include data drawn from the VEPP Web site covering the period around July 21, 2007, when a fissure eruption occurred on the east flank of Pu’u ’Ō’ō. The activity was preceded by several notable precursors. The data types available for the exercise include: Tilt GPS Seismic Webcam (note that you may not want to give out all images that are included, but instead pick out every 4th image or similar; also note that to see changes in Webcam images, it is best to view the images in PowerPoint—the changes are harder to see if the slides are printed and distributed as hard copy). The slides for each data type are clearly labeled. Notes are provided in some slides to explain what is shown. These notes may need to be deleted if the .ppt file is being given directly to the students.

Tilt

Pu’u ’Ō’ō crater Red dot on map indicates location of POC tiltmeter. Red bar on plot shows area that is zoomed in the next slide. Blue line is radial to the summit, and green line is tangential. Increases in the blue line indicate inflation of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō, and decreases are deflation. Increases in the green line indicate inflation of a source to the NE of the station, and decreases are deflation of that source.

GPS

Pu’u ’Ō’ō crater Red dots on map indicate locations of PUOC and SPIL GPS stations. Red line shows line length that is depicted in plot. Note that some data between 7/13 and 7/18 are missing. Increases in line length indicate inflation of the cone, and decreases indicate deflation.

Pu’u ’Ō’ō crater Red dots on map indicate locations of NPOC and JCUZ GPS stations. Red line shows line length that is depicted in plot. Increases in line length indicate inflation of the cone, and decreases indicate deflation.

Pu’u ’Ō’ō crater Red dots on map indicate locations of PUOC and OKIT GPS stations. Red line shows line length that is depicted in plot. Increases in line length indicate inflation of the cone, and decreases indicate deflation.

Seismic

Pu’u ’Ō’ō crater Red dot on map indicates location of STC short-period seismic station. Increases in RSAM values indicate increased seismic amplitudes (reflective of increased tremor and/or increased earthquake activity).

Pu’u ’Ō’ō crater Red dot on map indicates location of STC broadband seismic station. Note missing data in plot during 7/12 and 7/16. Increases in RSAM values indicate increased seismic amplitudes (reflective of increased tremor and/or increased earthquake activity).

Pu’u ’Ō’ō crater Map of earthquake activity at Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō during 7/10-7/23, 2007 (see color scale for timing of earthquakes). Note that there is no significant earthquake activity, suggesting that the RSAM increases in the prevous slides are driven by increased tremor or other noise, and not increases in actual numbers of locatable earthquakes.
