Plato’s Background Plato was born in Greece in 427 BC and died in Greece at the age of eighty or eighty-one at 348 B.C.E. but these dates are not entirely certain. Plato came from one of the wealthiest and most politically active families in Athens. He was the student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle, and he wrote in the middle of the fourth century B.C.E. in ancient Greece. Plato is one of the world's best known and most widely read and studied philosophers.

Plato’s Beliefs “Plato believed that reality is divided into two parts: the ideal and the phenomena. The ideal is the perfect reality of existence. The phenomena are the physical world that we experience; it is a flawed echo of the perfect, ideal model that exists outside of space and time.” (Who is Plato? - Philosophies, Ideas & Contributions - Video & Lesson Transcript, n.d.) The physical and intelligible worlds exist simultaneously. The physical world is a shadow of the intelligible, immaterial.
