Experimental Design Chapter 1.
Scientific Method 5 steps to better living Scientific Method A systematic approach to problem solving.
The Scientific Method there’s no single method to answering questions or solving problems. However, there is one characteristic of scientific problem solving:
1-1 What is Earth Science?. Earth Science Is: The scientific study of the Earth and the Universe around it. Causes of natural events can be explained.
Controls and Variables
What is the scientific method?
Scientific Method Notes. Scientific Method The way scientists learn and study about the world around them.
Scientific Processes The Scientific Process. What is Science? Comes from the Latin word scientia, which means “knowledge” A process that uses observation.
1.2 Using a Scientific Approach. 1. Make an Observation information obtained by using your five senses. Hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, or tasting.
“Biology: The Science of Life” Objectives To give a general understanding of the life science terminology. To recognize characteristics of organisms.
Science Words. Scientific Inquiry The ways scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on gathered evidence.
Dr. Fuchs. 1.1 What is Science What are the goals of Science and what procedures are at the core of scientific methodology?

Independent Variable is what you what you change in the experiment. You many only change 1 thing at a time. Some people nickname it the I-do variable.

With your lab table discuss what's wrong with this picture. Warm up With your lab table discuss what's wrong with this picture.

Warm up- Grab your composition books! What is the scientific method? Try to list the 6 steps.... Copy down the following vocab: Variable- something you are changing Independent variable- what's being manipulated (x-axis) Dependent variable- response to manipulation (y-axis) Control- remains constant, no manipulation

Can you count all the trees in the world? Crowther et al., 2015 3 trillion trees 422 trees/person 50% decline since human civilization began How did he measure all the trees in the world? satellite images, forest inventories and supercomputing technologies to calculate the number of trees   http://n.pr/1NZoqmX

Scientific Method Foldable- Why are the steps important? Observation/background research Hypothesis "If, then, because" Design experiment Gather data Conclusion Communicate results/repeat Use of senses to gather information about a subject. Research the topic to form a good hypothesis -> good experiment What are you testing? How? Variables?

Hypothesis- Testable answer to your question Observation/Research- Formulate a question based on observation, background research (Google) Hypothesis- Testable answer to your question “if, then, because" STATEMENT Design Experiment- test hypothesis. Includes variables-independent and dependent, a control, able to repeat Gather Data- Data should accept or reject our hypothesis Conclusion- gather data, analyze data (tables/graphs), conclude whether it supports or rejects the hypothesis Communication/ repeat- share findings so that others can verify/repeat the experiment and expand on the findings

Observation and Research Through observation, you formulate a question that you are trying to answer. For example: My car won’t start. Why? Inferences can be made using information you already know through books, past experiences, etc. or you can research your question. My car is out of gas.

Hypothesis This is what you think the answer to your question is based on the information that you have gathered. For example: If the car is out of gas, then it won’t start because it needs the gas to begin combustión.

Controlled Experiment Only tests a single factor in the experiment Has a control group Has a independent variable (manipulated/ x-axis) and a dependent variable (responding/y- axis).

Communicate and Retest Retest the hypothesis numerous times Report your findings so other scientists can learn from your experiments and repeat experiments

Hypothesis vs Theory vs Law Hypothesis an inference about why something happens based on some data Theory in-depth explanation of why something happens based on lots of data and accepted by the scientific community Law statement about something that happens that is universally accepted as being true

In 1887 a strange nerve disease attacked the people in the Dutch East Indies. The disease was beriberi. Symptoms of the disease included weakness and loss of appetite, victims often died of heart failure. Scientists thought if people where getting sick, then it might be caused by bacteria. They injected chickens with bacteria from the blood of patients with beriberi. The injected chickens became sick. However, so did a group of chickens that were not injected with bacteria. One of the scientists, Dr. Eijkman, noticed something. Before the experiment, all the chickens had eaten whole-grain rice, but during the experiment, the chickens were fed polished rice. Dr. Eijkman researched this interesting case and found that polished rice lacked thiamine, a vitamin necessary for good health

Discuss with your lab table and answer the following questions in your composition book. 1. What was observed? 2. What was the hypothesis? 3. How was the hypothesis tested? What was the experimented? 4. Should the hypothesis be supported or rejected based on the experiment? 5. What should be the new hypothesis and how would you test it?

Beriberi cont... What was the control? What was the independent variable? What was the dependent variable?

What part of the scientific method is this statement What part of the scientific method is this statement? Does the size of tank determine how large a fish is going to grow?
