Unit1 Introduction of robot Robots are used everywhere from work to home. These machines can do work too dangerous for humans, help around the house, or can be used just for fun. Figure 1-1 A scene from the play R.U.R Unit1 Introduction of robot 1 Part1 About robot What are Robots and Robotics? The word robot comes from the play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) written by Karel Čapek in 1920, which means “forced work or labor.” The play begins in a factory that uses robots. These robots are described as efficient but emotionless, incapable of original thinking and indifferent to self-preservation, as shown in Figure 1-1. This is the earliest idea of industrial robots. Figure 1-1 A scene from the play R.U.R

1 Unit1 Introduction of robot What are Robots and Robotics? Part1 About robot What are Robots and Robotics? Today, Robot means any man-made machine that can perform work or other actions normally performed by humans, either automatically or by remote control. Robots are machines that can be used to do jobs. Some robots can do work by themselves. Other robots must always have a person telling them what to do.

1 Unit1 Introduction of robot What are Robots and Robotics? Part1 About robot What are Robots and Robotics? Robotics is the branch of technology that deals with the study, design and use of robot systems. Robotics is related to the sciences of electronics, engineering, mechanics, and software. These technologies deal with robots that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behaviour, and or cognition. Many of today's robots are inspired by nature, contributing to the field of bio-inspired robotics.

1 Unit1 Introduction of robot Laws of robotics Part1 About robot Laws of Robotics are a set of laws, rules, or principles, which are intended as a fundamental framework to underpin the behavior of robots designed to have a degree of autonomy. The best known set of laws are Isaac Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" in 1942. The Three Laws are: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

1 Unit1 Introduction of robot Laws of robotics Part1 About robot In later fiction ,Asimov added a zeroth law, to precede the others: A robot may not injure humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. The Laws have been used by many others to define laws used in fact and fiction.
