Warm Up # 23 How are Communism, Capitalism and Socialism different as Economic Systems?

Roots of the Cold War During WWI and WWII, the US and USSR are allies. Roosevelt and Stalin work together to defeat Hitler. However, US and other Western nations aided Czar during the Russian Revolution Don’t want communism 1944 Roosevelt developed slogan : “the war on fascism ends; the war on capitalism begins.”

A little about Joseph Stalin Leader of Soviet Union from 1922 – 1952 Communist to the core and saw WWII as his opportunity to spread it. Gulag work camps to eliminate opponents Stalled fighting Hitler in Poland so it would be easier for him to put communist leaders in charge later. Soviet forces eliminated Nazis but also Nazi resisters who wanted old leadership Purged Jews in order to gain friends in Middle East Paranoid and often killed his own soldiers

Yalta Conference – Feb. 1945 Big 3: Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin Repair war torn Europe Stalin demands/gets control of Eastern Europe and occupies it with Red Army.

Potsdam Conference – July 1945 Meet again after Germany Surrender. This time Truman, Churchill, Stalin, and other EUR leaders

Outcomes at Potsdam Germany surrenders all conquered lands Germany pays 10% of Soviet damages in occupied zone Military occupation and rebuilding of Germany Divided into 4 zones, Berlin divided too.

Iron Curtain Descends Phrase from a Churchill speech Refers to the division of Communist controlled Eastern Europe and Capitalist Western Europe

Is Stalin an Enemy? Communism is spreading rapidly. Domino Theory: Idea that if one nation falls to communism, so will its neighbor, and so on.

Truman Doctrine U.S. would: Not attack existing communist governments Provide aid to any democratic government seeking to defend itself from communism Policy of containment Called for large military in peace time Led to the formation of the CIA
