9.3 A Time of Conflict
Barbary pirates (supported by the Ottoman Empire of Turkey) were raiding European and American ships in the Mediterranean Sea. They took cargo and enslaved sailors, holding them for ransom. European countries stopped these raids by paying tributes to the Barbary States - $$$ paid by one country to another for protection. After the American Revolution, U.S. ships weren’t protected by Royal Navy, so we paid bribe too.

Warship Philadelphia runs aground off coast of Tripoli and its crew is imprisoned. American sailors burn down the Philadelphia to keep pirates from using the ship.
