Independent Clauses Contain a subject and a verb AND they have a complete thought. Can stand on their own. Examples He peered around the corner The machine gun stopped He tied the ends with his teeth
Simple Sentences A simple sentence IS an independent clause: The sniper darted across the street. He was eating a sandwich, hungrily. The sniper took another whiff and put out the cigarette.
Compound Sentence A compound sentence contains at least two independent clauses Independent clauses are joined by a FANBOYS and a comma or a semi-colon The sniper darted across the street. He was eating a sandwich, hungrily. The sniper darted across the street; he was eating a sandwich, hungrily. He was eating a sandwich, hungrily, so he darted across the street.
