Cellular Respiration & Photosynthesis Review Common Assessment 3

What is cellular respiration? * Process used in the metabolic pathway in which glucose is degraded to carbon dioxide & water or energy available in food is used to make energy-rich compounds called ATP.

Is oxygen needed for cellular respiration to occur?

What is the end result of cellular respiration?

What is the formula for cellular respiration?

What are the 3 steps to cellular respiration? Glycolysis Krebs cycle Electron Transport Chain

Glycolysis Where does it take place in the cell? Aerobic, anaerobic conditions or both? How many molecules of ATP are produced during this step? What if there is no oxygen available?

How does fermentation occur? When ATP is made in the absence of oxygen. What are some different types of fermentation?

Lactic Acid Fermentation

Alcoholic Fermentation

Krebs Cycle Where does it take place? Aerobic or anaerobic? How many molecules of ATP are produced? What is produced during this process?

Electron Transport Chain Where does it take place? Aerobic or anaerobic How many molecules are made during this process? What is produced here? Most of the energy that enters the transport chain enters in the form of what?

Why do people die from some poisons? Some poisons can stop the electron transport chain by binding to an electron carrier, which stops ATP production thus preventing the cell from producing energy & killing the cell. Cyanide & carbon monoxide poisoning are examples.

Define Photosynthesis Process where plants use the sun’s energy, carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose & oxygen.

Where does photosynthesis occur? Leaves of plants Chloroplast of cells

Who is affected directly by photosynthesis? Autotrophs

What light do plants absorb the best?

Why do plants appear green?

Not all pigments absorb light the same!

If the dominant pigment is red, what wavelengths would be absorbed & what is reflected back?

What is the equation for photosynthesis? What are the two types of reactions” Light dependent Light independent

Light dependent reactions Where in the chloroplast does this happen? What are the products of this?

Light Independent Reactions Where does it occur in the chloroplast? This is also known as the _____ cycle. What is produced during this process. Once ATP & electrons are used up, it is recycled back as _____ & ______.

What is so important about these reactions?

What are factors that affect photosynthetic activity? Storms Volcanic activity Climate change Light intensity

What are signs that a plant can photosynthesize?

How does a prokaryote go through cellular respiration compared to an eukaryote?
