By Outkast Album Cover Analysis Hey ya! By Outkast Album Cover Analysis

The Gutenberg principle and album name This album cover does conform with the Gutenberg principle to a certain extent, the name of the album is in the centre of the picture and reads to the right, however the band name is in a logo that breaks the artist name into two half's, ‘out’ and ‘kast’. In this sense the album cover shares elements with both of the two album covers I have recently studied, the viewer will easily be able to tell what the album is called and the actual photograph used in the cover depicts the artists which balances out not having clear wording for the band. The album got its name from one of the songs on the track ‘Hey ya!’ and is one of Outkast’s biggest hits with 283,671,640 views on YouTube, hence the album is named after the song.

The aesthetics The album has two primary colours and incorporates them fully as a colour scheme, through the background, superimposed text and suits that they wear. The pastel blue and yellow complement each other and present the album positively which in turn complements the song which is also very ‘up beat’. The album shows the duo in Outkast suited and posing instead of a location shot or a picture to do with what the song is about, this studio polished look would have been popular for its cheapness and pretty aesthetic. By using the band members in the album cover your audience are able to connect with the band on a more advanced level than if it was just the band name put over the album. This with the colour scheme makes the choice of using the band as the album cover a good choice.

conclusion Out of the three album covers I have studied this is the one I will look too most as is is the perfect middle ground, it uses the Gutenberg for the album name, which was a big hitting song meaning many people would know it was by Outkast, but doesn’t use it for the band name letting them use a logo. In addition the colours complement the song which is a strong feature of the cover, by making a connection between the cover and the song you get a strong and focused album cover, supported more with the pretty aesthetic of the studio finish.
