It’s not that easy being green…. USG Programs, Policies and Resources in Support of Sustainable Manufacturing Alex Folk, Center Operations Manager National Institute of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership It’s not that easy being green…. I have provided some background in your handouts on the MEP program, where we’ve been and what we do. I’d like to hit a few high points as a lead in to talking about our new growth strategies services that support company and regional innovation. Roger: Dan has asked you to keep your remarks and slides to no more than 15 minutes. We suggest that you skim slides 1-9; pick only 2 or 3 that you want to say something about. Start talking in more detail on slide 10 as a lead in to the growth services work. September 27, 2007 NIST MEP

A Partnership In Practice What is the Green Suppliers Network? A partnership between the U.S. EPA and the U.S. DoC NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership Focus: Small & mid-sized manufacturing suppliers Approach: Lean & Clean on-site reviews Value Add: Expands lean definition of waste to include environmental considerations Deliverable: Measurable business and environmental impacts Green Suppliers Network is a collaborative venture among industry, the U.S. EPA, and Dept. of Commerce’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership to help small and medium sized manufacturers stay competitive and profitable while reducing their impact on the environment. Green Suppliers Network offers low-cost, onsite lean and clean reviews that provide custom solutions to meet your needs. Traditional lean initiatives focus on identifying and eliminating non-value added time, labor and capital. Yet, one type of waste – environmental considerations- often gets overlooked. By expanding the traditional lean review to include “clean,” you’ll uncover these “hidden wastes.” As a result of the Green Suppliers Network review, you will see greater cost savings through increased material and resource use efficiency and superior environmental performance. Green Suppliers Network also provides a framework for capturing these savings and measuring the environmental and business impacts of implementing recommended strategies, in addition to adding social benefits such as job retention and creation. The lean & clean approach helps companies gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace and reduce their environmental impact, which benefits both the community and their workforce.
