Hook: Minor characters are never in the spotlight, but they can contribute greatly to the events in the play Thesis: Minor characters play an important role in Romeo and Juliet because they affect the play dramatically in both positive and negative ways. Paris, Tybalt, and the Nurse all play an important role in Romeo and Juliet.

Paris

Paris has an impact on the story of Romeo and Juliet in both positive and negative ways. Juliet is not very excited about marrying Paris, the man that her parents have chosen for her. Evidence: “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move;/ But no more deep will I endart mine eye/ Than your consent gives strength to make it fly” (1.3. 98-100).

Paris has an impact on the story of Romeo and Juliet in both positive and negative ways. Juliet is distanced from her parents because they think that Paris is the perfect man for her and she does not. Evidence: “Doth she not count her blest,/ Unworthy as she is, that we have wrought/ So worthy a gentleman to be her bride?” (3.5. 143-145).

Paris has an impact on the story of Romeo and Juliet in both positive and negative ways. Lord Capulet decides to have the marriage take place a day earlier after Juliet begs for his forgiveness, and this accelerates the tragedy. Evidence: “Send for the County, go tell him of this./ I’ll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning” (4.2. 23-24).
