SEE-set Writing for R&J English 9 Perry High

Prompt: Write a two SEE-set argumentative paragraph asserting your claim as to whom you believe is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.

Paragraph Structure Topic Sentence S- Statement E- Evidence E- Explanation Conclusion Sentence

Introduction Sentence Although the blame for the tragic deaths of young Romeo and Juliet could be placed upon numerous characters or influences in the play, __________ should bear the blunt of the blame for two reasons. Even though many may feel that fate/chance/destiny has the biggest influence on the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet, _________ is most to blame for two reasons. Some believe that a character or certain characters are to blame for the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet; however, most of the blame should be placed upon fate/chance/destiny.

Statement __________ should bear the blunt of the blame because he/she... Lord Capulet should bear the blunt of the blame because he forces Juliet into a marriage with a man she is not in love with.

Evidence For example, Capulet threatens to disown her and let her “beg, starve, die in the streets” if she disobeys his orders to marry Paris (III.v.193).

Explanation/Elaboration Capulet’s harsh treatment of his daughter and stubbornness forces Juliet into an impossible situation where she is forced to marry a man although she is married already or choosing to end her life. This unreasonable attitude of Capulet puts Juliet in certain danger.

(Don’t forget to include the second SEE-set here.)

Conclusion Sentence Clearly, Lord Capulet is to blame as his actions were unacceptable and influential in Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Lord Capulet is surely to blame here as his attitude and actions were instrumental in causing the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
