Romeo and Juliet LITERARY TERMS

Apostrophe figure of speech in which an absent person, a personified inanimate being, or an abstraction is addressed as though present

PERSONIFICATION Type of metaphor in which a nonhuman quality is talked about as if it were human

Occurs when the audience knows something the character does not DRAMATIC IRONY Occurs when the audience knows something the character does not

Inversion Reversal of the normal order of language

ASIDE Words spoken to the audience or another character, but are not heard by all characters on stage

SOLILOQUY A long speech in which a character who is on stage alone expresses thought aloud

PUN Play on words or two words that sound alike, but have different meanings
