Description In this art the picture is of a family. I can see a man, a boy, and a baby. There are orange, gray, brown, black, and cream colors. The lines in the work create textures, and add emphasis to the forms. The lines can be found all over the people. The texture is fairly smooth, and the forms are fairly smooth as well. The figures in the work looks organic in nature. There are stool and people forms. The family is in a close space. The artist used a sketchy rough technique. Oil pastels are used to give basic form, and watercolors are used to fill in negative space.

Analysis I see the family. The kid and baby are the focal point/form/elements I see first because they look like they are interacting with each other. Asymmetrical balance is used to create a more casual or free mood. The proportions are not normal. The adults have smaller heads compared to their bodies.

Interpretation There is symbolism in the artwork. The book in the father’s hands might show how he is educating the children. The stoic parents on either side of the kids might be protecting the kids/ symbolize protection. The baby and the boy are the only ones interacting which might symbolize the relationship between siblings. There is not a lot of emotion in this piece. I think the author did not want the viewer to get very emotional. This work does not remind me of things I have experienced. This is because my family aesthetic is different. At the time, fathers and mothers were a strong and stoic figures. World war one was over, so the work could be showing the strength of the people. There is also a wall which could symbolize the iron curtain after the war.

Judgement The complexity of the lines in this piece make it more successful. There is also quite a bit of movement depicted by the lines. The whole piece does seem a bit rough though, which gives off a slightly unfinished look. The piece is a little bit abstract in form and with the colored lines across the body. It is abstract with abnormal proportions. This work looks very unique. It seems to have its own style, with a unique combination of different media, forms, patterns, and other things. The artist could have improved the work by changing the proportions, or adding more emotional elements. This would make the piece look less like a rough draft, and more like artwork.
