Quotes Of Mice and Men = “I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn't ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog” – Candy Blood Brothers = “Why didn’t you give me away! I could have been…I could have been him!”

Annotations This shows the friendship between Candy and his dog, because he wanted to shoot him to stop the dogs pain and misery not because of his smell and how old he was, which is why Carlson shot him. Displays the powerful effect of friendship between a human and an animal. “I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn't ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog” Later on, a similar event happens when George shoots Lennie so that Curley doesn’t. I think that Candy and his dog represent the friendship of George and Lennie, so this regret of not shooting his dog is repeated later on with George shooting Lennie. Lennie represents the dog because he is vulnerable and weak.

Annotations Repetition - Gives a powerful effect because it hinders how Mickey feels, you can hear the anger and disappointment when he repeats ‘I could have been’. Its almost like its difficult for him to say it out loud. Jealously of social class in society, Mickey envies the life Eddie was given out of luck. “Why didn’t you give me away! I could have been…I could have been him!” Shows how upbringing can affect future, because Mickey doesn’t have a successful adulthood and develops depression , however Eddie has a wealthy upbringing and becomes successful. Mickey resents Eddie for that and resents the fate.
