Windsor Castle

History The site has been the official residence of queens and kings from William the Conqueror to the present day. Royals have been born, married and buried in the castle. Windsor castle was built as a wooden fort in the 11the century. In 1992, over 110 rooms in the palace were damaged or destroyed in a fire.

Round Tower The Round Tower was build in 1779 replacing the Norman wooden building.

Norman Tower and Moat Garden Three kings were once imprisoned in the Norman Tower David of Scotland, John of France and James I of Scotland.

Quadrangle Changing Guard and other official ceremonies take place here when the Queen is in residence.

King Henry VIII Gate The King Henry VIII Gate is the main gate of the castle. It was built in 1511. It’s decorated with Henry VIII’s symbols – the Tudor rose and pomegranate emblem of his first wife, Catherine Aragon.

St. George’s Chapel St. George’s chapel is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England. Ten famous British monarchs are buried here (Henry VIII, Charles I etc.)

State Apartments The State Apartments are one of the impressive arts of the Castle. They contain old master paintings and sculptures. The Crimson Drawing Room was severely damaged in the 1992 fire when the ceiling collapsed and the walls were badly burnt. The steel roof structure expanded in the intense heat and pushed out the eastern wall overlooking the garden, threatening the entire façade with collapse.

The Grand Staircase and Grand Vestibule In the Grand Staircase the ball which killed Admiral Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar.

Queen Mary’s Doll’s House There is also the Queen Mary’s Doll’s house. You can find everything in this house – from tiny crown jewels in their own locked room to a small garage with a small Rolls Royce in it.
