Democratic Unionist Party By: Kim Lestrange and Nikki Schwarer

Ideology The Democratic Unionist Party focuses a lot on national conservatism, social conservatism, British unionism, British nationalism, and euroscepticism. This party falls towards the right wing of the political spectrum which includes the conservatives, liberals, and Christian democrats. They oppose socialism and social democracy. (Right side on constitution/left on some social policies)

Manifesto and the Main Policy Positions The 2015 Westminster Manifesto focuses on issues that the United Kingdom Parliament is responsible for. (Economy, defense, UK constitution) The Northern Ireland Plan (economic powerhouse, public services, fairness, strength) Public Spending- The budget deficit needs to be eliminated. Immigration policy- This is a huge issue that they are working on to help reduce tensions which have recently damaged community relations

Current Leaders Peter Robinson (Founded the Party with Ian Paisley)- Declared the First Minister of Northern Ireland on June 5, 2008. In 2010, he stepped down and gave his position to Arlene Foster and then regained his position. In September 2015, his bid to adjourn the assembly was rejected, so he stood aside to allow Arlene Foster to take over.

Main supporters The main supporters include that of the Protestant Church, supporters of Unionist and Democratic ideals, and people in Northern Ireland that want to have a stronger relationship within the United Kingdom, and for a stronger Northern Ireland. The party’s priorities also seem to benefit and gain support from the middle class.

Member in Parliament They have 8 seats in Westminster, 38 seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly, and 1 in the European Parliament.

Is the Party Growing or Declining? The Democratic Unionist Party is growing and they are the largest unionist party in Northern Ireland. Results of the 2015 election show that the party maintained the number of seats from the previous election. The parties share of votes increased from 25% to 25.7%.
