Activation – Synthesis Theory of Dreaming (1977) The activation-synthesis model is a theory of dreaming developed by researchers Hobson and McCarley. suggests that dreams are caused by the physiological processes of the brain That the brain sends random messages that then create a story states that brain activation during REM sleep results in production of dreams
