The Tyrrhena-Malea Volcanic Province Presented by Leon Manfredi 4/19/2008
Overview The Tyrrhena-Malea Volcanic Province Covers over 2.1 million square kilometers Contains the six oldest central vent volcanoes on Mars, which formed between 4.0 to 3.6 Ga Modified by aeolian and paraglacial processes
Purpose of Research Determine boundary of volcanic province Perform crater count to determine age of relevant surfaces
Determining Boundaries Used visible and infrared images Looked for edge of lava flows Elevation data Used profiles to determine boundary Previous geological maps Used previously determined contacts when unable to find visual or profile data
Images MOC THEMIS VIS

Geological Maps
Crater Counting Methodology Identified surface for dating based on volcano morphology Measured all crater diameters in and the surface area of the defined area Used crater size-frequency distribution method to calculate the age of the surface using the measured surface area and crater diameters
Crater Counting Results
Updated Boundaries
Summary New boundaries for the Tyrrhena-Malea Volcanic Province were determined Based on cater counts, age of province is estimated at 3.6-4.0 Ga
