Presentation transcript:

What is regeneration? Regeneration is the process of improving a rural or urban place by making positive changes. These include knocking down derelict buildings and building new ones (redevelopment), improving the existing buildings and area (renewal) or changing the image of a place through redesign and publicity (re-imaging). Write this in BIG on the front of your Regeneration folder. It should also go in your notes from today.

Regenerating Places: Economic Activity Wednesday, 21 November 2018

Learning Outcomes EQ1: How and why do places vary? Content By the end of the lesson, we will be able to give examples of ways in which places vary in terms of their economy, and how we can classify these economies. We will also be able to give reasons for why places have changed over time. Process You will do this by completing a card sort, predicting the trends of a graph before analysing this and doing some reading. Skill Use of GIS to represent data about place characteristics.

Economic Sectors and Classification Each of you have a quick card sort. You need to match the economic sector with the description of the sector and see if you can identify places in the country where we would find these employment types. You have 5 minutes!

Clark Fisher Model of Economic Activity What trends do you think we will see with the five economic sectors over time? Pre-Industrial Industrial Post- Industrial Tertiary activities Employment Secondary activities Quaternary activities Quinary activities Primary activities Time

How do places vary? As your first research task of the module, you are going to log onto: www.datashine.org.uk and consider the variations in the following factors: Health Life expectancy Education Economy base (using Professional occupations, skilled trades occupation and elementary occupations) You need to look at four key areas to help identify how places differ. You should look at: Stockport Liverpool London Birmingham www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk

Location Health Av Economy base Education Life Expectancy London -Hounslow (TW4 5JD) London - Tower Hamlets, Mile End & Globe Town (E2) London- Kensington & Chelsea, Holland (W11) Birmingham – Smethwick, Sandwell, West Midlands (B21) Birmingham – Halesowen, Belle Vale, Dudley, West Midlands (B62) Liverpool – Liverpool One (L1 8JQ) Liverpool- Toxeth (L8 0QP) Stockport (SK2)

What key differences have we found? Read pages 198 and 199 (chameleon book) and make notes under the five sub-heading which are already in the book. Ensure you use statistical data to provide some evidence to support your points. You will need these for your exam question.

Review/Homework Using examples, examine employment changes which have affected your local place. (10 marks) Suggested structure:  Introduction: define key terms and suggest what you will discuss Main body: Evaluative information throughout – mini-conclusions which relate to the question. Conclusion – detailed summary and an overall answer to the question   Where do the marks come from? - Identification and definition of main employment types - Historical employment of North West(most likely Stockport and its surrounding suburbs) - Key event which led to major changes in employment in the North West - Examples of employment type and where they will be found in Greater Manchester - Indication of the North West’s main economy base and income.
