Offering the most appropriate network in each case Offering the most appropriate network in each case, for instance, as well as cellular connectivity, we are offering Low Power Wide Area networks in some cases where the battery consumption or the price of the device is critical.

And helping developers to build IoT applications And finally, helping developers to build IoT applications by reducing the complexity when accessing to sensor data or acting upon devices, So at the end they can develop in a similar way as they are currently doing in other kind of internet application or services, using standard REST APIs. For that, we are contributing to FIWARE which provide developers with a great software stack to develop IoT based applications as well as royalty free and standard APIs. .

IoT offers a great breeding ground for Open Innovation in different areas, such as Cities We think that IoT offers great opportunities for Open Innovation, in different areas. For instance, Smart Cities is a perfect example where amazing applications are going to be developed thanks to the sensors and devices deployed across the city But the fact is that we don’t know yet what is going to be the killer application… But we think that it we empower developers to build and test applications in the city, dozen of great applications what we cant imagine now will arise.

How to enhance and embrace these innovations? We have been wondering how companies can help that these kind of innovation flourish and embrace them.

1 2 3 Standard APIs and common data models We need together with other companies, the administration and the rest of ecosystem to adopt: 1 Standard APIs and common data models 2 Open IoT and Open Data Platforms For that we need together with other companies , administration and the rest of ecosystem to: 1-Provide developers with standard APIs and common data models. If developers use standard APIs and data models, we can help them to scale, so their application can move from local to regional or global footprint. In the case of cities, we are promoting the usage of the FIWARE NGSI standard. 2-Provide cities with open IoT Platforms and Open Data, such as CKAN, which is an open source platform and is part of the FIWARE reference architecture. 3-And finally, to Adopt a “driven by implementation” model, . The goal is that communities and developers can (1) co-create their services based on basic but commonly-defined data models, (2) influence the definition of new models by implementing and experimenting, and (3) help “curate” existing data models. Specifically, this will mean engaging organisations and communities, leveraging relevant initiatives, for instance startups & SMEs selected through the FIWARE Accelerator Programme and the OrganiCity Experimentation-as-a-Service facility, Code for Europe or other relevant programmes. 3 A “driven by implementation” model, engaging organisations and leveraging relevant initiatives

The Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) initiative That’s what currently is being carried out in the Connected Smart Cities Network with the Open and Agile Initiative. An initiative we are supporting form Telefónica. Where more tan 30 cities has joined in the first wave, and more than 50 are expected to join in the second.
